Our Mission
What is the gospel? What does it mean for believers to bring the gospel to the lost?,
Much of what is presented to Christians as "the gospel" is not biblical in its basis, and this should concern every Christian.
Jesus' example in presenting the gospel was Law to the proud; Grace to the humble. This cuts across the modern, non-confrontational methods, which seldom bring people to the knowledge of their own sin.
Most Christians would heartily agree that we have been commissioned by Jesus to take the gospel into the world for the saving of souls. And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. (Mar 16:15, see also Matt 28). But, many are divided as to how this should be accomplished.
Paul's instructions help clarify this subject by explaining a very important issue:
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! (Rom 10:13-15).
And in Colossians:
Him (Christ), we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus (Col 1:28)
It is essential that today's church is obedient to Jesus by taking the gospel to the lost through the biblical method of preaching. It is bad theology to suggest that the church assembly is the place for evangelising sinners. Literally, Church is the gathering of the called-out ones. When we assemble it is for the purpose of God's people being able to worship their Lord and Saviour in Spirit and in truth - something that an unsaved person cannot do.
Think about Jesus' command to the church: Go ye into all the world... It seems that today's church has this back-to-front. We are trying to bring the world into the church as if this is the place in which they will then be evangelised. However, The Great Commission is to GO, and we take this as Our Commission.
Clearly, The Great Commission has been given to the church for a very particular reason: How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
Not only do we need preachers, but we need to be preaching the right message.
For this reason, at New Destiny we are constantly endeavouring to train and equip the people of God with skills to fulfil The Great Commission. One of these skills is learning to use The Law so as to bring the knowledge of sin. God's Law still has a purpose today.
The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple (Psa 19:7). One of the elements of The Law is in the converting of the soul. It does this by bringing the knowledge of sin.
Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin (Rom 3:20). It is clear that none can be saved through the keeping of The Law. In fact, The Law, when used properly, simply reveals to people exactly what their sin is.
What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet (Rom 7:7). In this generation we have been duped into believing that any time a Christian mentions The Law he/she must be a Legalist. However, there is a right use of The Law, and that right use is to bring the knowledge of sin in order that souls might be converted through gaining an understanding of how hopelessly lost they are without the saviour.
Our Commission: Preach throughout the world that there might be conversion of souls through the right use of The Law and the good news of the gospel. |
